A friend of mine told me a while ago, while she was still in high school, that she doesn’t read. When I acted surprised about it, she told me that she does read, but it’s just hood books. I was like… so you read. That “just” phrasing revealed a lot to me about how readers of lower case L literature feel about their books and themselves. It’s implied that certain genres of writing are not worthy of critical inspection, and that hurts Literature too because when people reading hood books or romance don’t consider themselves readers, they won’t venture out to other genres. This barrier alienates readers. Lower case L literature obviously doesn’t get the same respect that capital L Literature does. But why? More people buy them. They’re faster to get through. They’re engaging. They’re accessible. Especially now, when people’s attention span for reading has been shortened by the internet, literature seems like it would be a great avenue to make literary conversations and academic writing more popular. Recently, it was taking me forever (in a good way) to get through Norman Ohler’s Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich. Day after day, I’d pick it up and read as much as I could, but sometimes the words just blurred and I would lose the narrative. I also have a two year old, so long stretches of reading are hard to come by. Then Danielle Santiago’s book Grindin’ showed up from an interlibrary loan. I packed my kid up right away to go pick it up. I put Blitzed on pause and read Grindin’ in a day and a half. And it felt great. I was so happy to be back in a story. It was especially nice to be immediately curious, interested, and eager to find time to read. That book made it easier to return to and finish Blitzed after a couple days. Usually the first thing I want to do when I finish a book is go to Google and see what other people have said about it. For Literary books  like Blitzed that’s easy. There are tons are articles and think pieces and Twitter threads. That’s true of some popular literature books too, like Sister Souljah’s Coldest Winter Ever, but more often, there’s close to nothing. Nothing pops up right away for Grindin’, even though the writer is fairly well known. Sites like Amazon and Goodreads  become the place to converse, which is great in some ways, but, again, is isolating because it’s practically the only place where those conversations are happening. Hood books have this special quality about them that allows you to just get through it. The pacing of the story moves quickly, and it’s easy to lose track of time. Zane books, all of Sister Souljah’s novels, the Cartel seriesâ€"these books seem to physically pull you in. Similarly, romance novels drag you in. Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series, for example, are genuinely fun to read. The chapter in which the narrator, Rebecca, is helping her love interest shop for suitcases was the first time I’d laughed out loud at a book since Tina Fey’s memoir. The most recent romance novel I read was An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole, and the writing itself felt like Literature. It crossed over to historical fiction, and used a complex situation to say something larger about American culture. These are not simple books. The repeated use of erotic triangles that run through these genres can’t be the problem, since that narrative runs through a lot of Literary books. The readership, which includes a lot of women and prisoners, could be part of the stigma. The writers, who are usually marginalized by race, gender, or both and usually not MFA graduates, may also have something to do with it. The treatment of those commonly associated with literature, though, shows exactly why these books are important right now. Limiting the conversation that surrounds these texts that are relevant, meaningful to people’s lives, has serious consequences. Megan Sweeney did work on the topic of what incarcerated women read and the popularity of hood books in prisons, and more and more with middle class white and black women as well. In Keepin It Real: Incarcerated Womens Readings of African American Urban Fiction, she explains that “the genre allows readers to consider their experiences and speech patterns as worthy of representation in a book” (139). Publishing them is one piece of legitimizing the stories, but talking about them would enhance that. These stories are important and deserve critical inspection, and the more writing that gets done on these books, the better they’ll become. There’s a certain kind of power in being able to pick up a book and dive right in. Lower case L literature has a magnetic quality about it. These books stand alone and are also great in between more complex books. Most importantly, they tell necessary stories.

Clements (1916) early in the twentieth century, the notion of natural communities as naturally occurring assemblages of species in harmony with local climatic regimes became ecological dogma. If a community was disturbed, damage would be repaired along a predictable continuum toward the climax community. Later, equilibrium became an explicit assumption for most ecosystems, a steady state to which a system returned if a disturbance altered its balance (Connell 1978). Dissenting voices proposed that species act independently of one another and that perturbation is a common event in many natural communities (Gleason 1917; Watt 1947). Strong evidence for the commonness of disorder in nature has come from a large body of literature documenting the profound and pervasive effects of a multitude of disturbances–fires, floods, windstorms, alluvial erosion, landslides, grazing, insects, and invasion of exotics (Veblen and Ashton 1978; Bormann and Likens 1979; Sprugel and Bormann 1981). It is now believed that all ecosystems are somewhat dynamic and that, in some, severe or even catastrophic disturbance is a regular occurrence. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary gives 2 very interesting definitions of psychology. The first definition is "the science of mind and behavior" (Merriam-Webster, 2017). The second definition is "the study of the mind and behavior in relation to a particular field of knowledge or activity" (Merriam-Webster, 2017). The first definition stood out to me because of the word "science". I recently wrote a discussion board post on psychology as a science. There is a lot of debate on this issue, and I find it amazing that the dictionary defines psychology as a science. The second definition also resonates with me because this is the definition of psychology that I know very well. I remember taking Introduction to Psychology as a 17-year-old and learning about the different psychologists and schools of thought. I also remember learning about various mental disorders and thinking about psychologists and therapists working to tr eat them by going into the mind of the patient. For this reason, I have always described psychology as "the how and why" of life. I took a quiz titled "What is Your Theoretical Orientation in Psychology?" and I w as very intrigued by the result, which read, " You see the conscious mind as being largely controlled by unconscious forces. When something is wrong with a person's behavior, you see the mental illness as resulting from something negative being repressed in the unconscious, such as a traumatic memory or feelings of shame or guilt. To you, the job of the psychoanalyst is to uncover these unconscious problems and bring them into conscious awareness for the patient, forci ng them to confront the problem". My orientation is psychoanalytic , which is very accurate. I have always enjoyed reading about Sigmund Freud and his theory of psychoanalysis. Also, clinical psychology is the field that I want to go into. I have a soft spot for people with mental illnesses and who suffer as a result of trauma. I also have an idea of what I want to research for my thesis/dissertation. I want to focus on adult victims of trauma and adults who suffer from mental illness. I've noticed that a lot of my friends who want to go into clinical psychology want to focus on children and adolescents. I feel like the reason for that is so that they can address the issues early and hopefully cure the children into adulthood. I want to help the people who never got the treatment they needed, or limited treatment . I want to help the people who others may have given up on, or are deemed "lost causes". One of my inspirations is the movie Sybil (based on the book), which was a true account of a psychiatrist (Dr. Cornelia Wilbur) who treated a woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder (called multiple per sonalities at the time, as the event took place in the 50s) . The patient, named Sybil to protect her identity, had suffered severe trauma in her childhood. She endured physical, mental, and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother (who had been diagnosed with post-partum depression and schizophrenia). Sybil had 16 different personalitiesthere were 16 different people in her subconscious, from a baby to an old woman, and even 2 boys. The different personalities were Sybil's way of coping with her trauma. Dr. Wilbur spoke with her mentor about Sybil, only to be dismissed and told that the woman's condition was just a case of hysteria. Using hypnosis, Dr. Wilbur brought all 16 "selves" to Sybil's conscious, and helped her realize that all her pent-up anger was supposed to be geared toward her mother. Once Sybil correctly directed her anger, her road to healing could begin. My orientation relates to quite a few divisions in the APA, including Clinical, Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy, Social, Testing, Therapy, Trauma, Women, Counseling. She was a beautiful young white skinned Creole girl, daughter to ex-slave and plantation owners, surrounded by mainly blacks and few rich whites.Althoug h she came from a wealthy background, as she grew up her mother was not financially doing well and was fairly close to losing their plantation. Evidently her and her family was despised. She was not accepted by the black community surrounding her and underwent racism having to constantly be called a â€Å"white cockroach† (Rhys 13) by the black community. The few whites in the area also frowned upon her and her family for not being of true English descent.So although she lived in a Calibri estate surrounded by beautiful nature and ocean sun filled days, on the inside she felt out of place, fearful and lonely. Her only childhood friend Tia betrayed her leaving her further damaged by stealing her clothes and pennies, while out one day swimming unsupervised. A child needs friends and interaction with others in order to communicate and be socially inclined. Things seem to turn around for Antoinette, when her mother marries Mr. Mason, a wealthy English man, who decides to stay and renovate Coulibri.Unfortunately racial tensions arose among recent freed black slaves, escalading to a protest that ends in catastrophe. Their home gets burned down with torches; her brother injured fatally passes away, leading her mother to fully manifest insanity due to the event. At this point Antoinette’s life drastically changes she is injured and sick for several weeks. She is faced with death once more by the passing of her brother and loses her mother as she becomes mentally unstable and dies; Mr. Mason abandons them leaving Jamaica while traveling.Antoinette is sent to live in a catholic convent ran by nuns. As you can imagine this was very hard for Antoinette, although she was surrounded by others she was left their isolated. In the convent she grows a fascination with death, since it is something she is used to she begins to like the dark ominous part of religion and death. I believe Antoinette suppresses all the calamities she has had to deal with till that point . Life has not been kind to her and despite of it she still manages to keep it together although she becomes a docile human being.When she finally reaches the age of seventeen Mr. Mason visits her more and finally removes her from the convent and introduces her to his English friends. Upon this happening an arranged marriage is what is in store for Antoinette. She is married to Mr. Rochester; their marriage is more like a business pact because they do not marry on the base of love. It is apparent Mr. Rochester marries Antoinette merely for her riches. She is not in love with him but do to her docile way she becomes intoxicated with the idea of Love and having a male companion.At first Mr. Rochester is amorous with Antoinette, upon finding out about her past, which he was not aware of his attitude and view towards Antoinette changes. His indifference towards her, affects her deeply as she becomes distressed. She looks to Christophine for help, who unknowingly makes the situation with herself and husband worse. Gradually Antoinette begins to drink more, making her act out violently. Alcohol distorts the mind and suppressed feelings she has kept hidden arise.The fact that her husband had no real love or apathy for her austerely depressed her and made her sick, she became emotionally unstable. Due to the era they were in, divorce was not easy to achieve. Upon marrying Mr. Rochester She basically became his property along with all of her wealth. She was trapped and depended on her husband. She had no control of her life and she was going the same route her mother went. Mr. Rochester constantly called Antoinette Bertha, which affected her because it was not what she went by, this Bertha finally manifested herself in Antoinette. Mr.Rochester’s disdain and abandonment was the climax to Antoinette’s insanity, as she was isolated and locked in an attic. Throughout her life Antoinette suffered multiple losses, her mental health got worse as she transitioned into an adult. Her mood was low and depressing, she barely ate, and she became delusional by believing in her dreams as a true reality. I think anyone in her position would go insane and prefer to die than live in such a horrible reality. As a child she had not one positive role model to look up to, primarily her mother is at fault with how Antoinette’s life came to be.She could have been a real mother and been loving and supportive towards her daughter who always needed her. Childhood is the most vital part of life; this is when a child needs to be in a positive loving environment. Otherwise a child becomes a dysfunctional part of society as an adult, causing harm to oneself or others. Due to the treatment she received as a child, she had very low self esteem and no self worth; always accepting situations when all along she could have changed her destiny, if only she was not so weak.Ironically she turned out weak just like her mother, unknowingly becoming mentally ill, lead ing to the loss of her life.
